26/06/2012 END OF YEAR MASS MARKS LORETO COLLEGE RETIREMENTS

The closing of the 2011-2012 academic year was marked at Loreto College on 26th June with a Mass to celebrate the successes and the friendship of the past 12 months at the Castlerock Road school.  Celebrated by Rev Father Rory Sheehan, the Mass was themed around the Olympic Games, with the motto ‘Inspiring a Generation’.

At the Mass, several members of staff who have inspired numerous generations of Loreto College students were celebrated as they approach retirement and take their leave of Loreto College.  Tributes were paid to Mr Brendan Mullan, School Caretaker, Mrs Valerie Maxwell, School Secretary and Mr John Montgomery, Chemistry Technician, all of whom have devoted many years of service to the school.  In particular, though, everyone at Loreto College wished to express their heartfelt thanks to two teachers, Mrs Eileen Diamond and Mrs Aideen Ahern, who have, respectively, served for 33 years and 34 years on the teaching staff.  Mrs Aideen Ahern has taught English at Loreto College since 1978, and has been a leading figure in the pastoral care of the school, as a long-serving Year Head, teacher in charge of Daily Pupil Welfare and of Child Protection.  Mrs Eileen Diamond, meanwhile, since her appointment in 1979, has taught Modern Languages, English, History and Careers.  Both Mrs Ahern and Mrs Diamond are former students of Loreto College and so have a lifetime’s association with the College.

Speaking on behalf of all the staff and of the Senior Leadership Team, Miss Belinda Toner, Vice Principal, expressed her gratitude to all of those members of staff who were retiring.  Paying tribute to Mrs Valerie Maxwell, Mr John Montgomery and Mr Brendan Mullan, Miss Toner commented that the service offered to the College’s students could not be as excellent as it was without the dedication and professionalism of excellent support staff such as these three people who would be greatly missed.  Speaking of Mrs Aideen Ahern and Mrs Eileen Diamond, Miss Toner commented that everyone in Loreto College, students and staff, would miss their wisdom, their knowledge, their caring and dedicated approach to everything they did and their tremendous humour and sense of fun.
