On 12th June, a number of teachers from across Northern Ireland gathered at Loreto College, Coleraine for a course around the Greenfoot programming environment.  Greenfoot is a tool designed to teach the principles of Java programming through game creation and simulations.

This course was led by Mr Clarke Rice, Head of ICT at Loreto College Coleraine.  Mr Rice has enjoyed success using Greenfoot in the classroom and was happy to share his experience with others who wish to introduce and develop programming concepts in the classroom.  In teaching programming via Greenfoot, he has been very impressed with student engagement and understanding of programming and Computer Science concepts.

Teachers participating expressed their thanks and appreciation for an enjoyable and interesting day.  Many intend to introduce Greenfoot into their classrooms in the next year, as part of long-term strategies to introduce Computer Science alongside skills-based ICT.

This course ran with the support of Computing At School and is one of a number of successful teacher-training events they have endorsed in the past year.  Computing At School is the representative body for teachers of Computer Science in the UK and is active in re-establishing Computer Science as a subject at all levels of the curriculum.

Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, paid tribute to Mr Clarke Rice for his energy and enthusiasm in teaching the Greenfoot course to students this year, and for his outreach to teachers from other schools, furthering the long-established reputation for excellence across all areas of the curriculum in Loreto College Coleraine.
