13/06/2012 LORETO STORM TO MALLON CUP TITLE
Loreto College Coleraine lifted the Ulster Colleges’ Mallon Cup for gaelic football on Tuesday 12th June, following a tightly-contested final against Edmund Rice College Glengormley.
The Loreto College side, made of up Year 9 and a small number of Year 8 boys, emerged victorious with a final scoreline of Loreto Coleraine 3-18 Edmund Rice College Glengormley 1-10.
While Lee McGreevey and Pearse McFaul worked hard for Edmund Rice in defence, Liam Tosh, Loreto’s centre forward, created huge problems for them and he was involved in many of their scores as well as shooting a modest 1-1 himself. Stiofan Tracey’s penetrating runs from midfield were also difficult to deal with, while Matthew Connolly was very sharp with any opening he got. Edmund Rice couldn’t get into the game in the opening half and trailed by 0-9 to 0-2 at the break, most of Loreto’s total coming from Tracey and Connolly.
The Glengormley men however came out of their shell more in the second half with Micheal McGreevey pushing forward and scores from Dylan Whiteway and Pearse McVarnock closed the gap slightly. However, Loreto managed to shoot three goals – from Tosh, Tracey and full-forward Mark Cassidy – and these scores did much to secure their first title in quite some time. Cillian Gilmour struck a fine consolation goal for Edmund Rice close to the finish.
The Loreto College team were captained by Shane McIntyre (Year 9) and coached by teacher Mr Seán Murtagh. The team members were: Daniel Walton, James McKeown, Aidan Boyle, Liam Ferris, Eamon McLaughlin, Aidan McGonigle, Fearghal Close, Stiofan Tracey 1-6, Conor Gillen 0-2, Fergal Dillon 0-2, Liam Tosh 1-1, Shane McIntyre capt. 0-2, Matthew Connolly 0-4, Mark Cassidy 1-0, Eoin Canning 0-1.
The boys and Mr Murtagh were congratulated by Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, on a fine campaign throughout the year and on a wonderful performance in the Final, on behalf of all the staff and students of the College. With such talent and an Ulster title at such a young age, this success bodes well for the years ahead in gaelic games at Loreto College.
