25/05/2012 LORETO STUDENTS GET HANDS-ON WITH MOBILE PHONE APP DEVELOPMENT

On Tuesday 22nd May 2012, a group of students form Loreto College, Coleraine visited the School of Computing and Information Engineering at the University of Ulster, Coleraine.  This was the final event in a successful Android App Camp mobile phone development workshop, that was held in conjunction with the University as part of their Tutoring in Schools programme.

For the past three months, Loreto students have met with UU undergraduates, Gareth Blair, Dominic Holmes and Glenn Sayers as part of a successful after-schools programming club.  Loreto students have been introduced to the principles of software design and development through the creation of Android mobile phone applications.

On 22nd May, Loreto students had an exciting opportunity to visit UU’s labs and research area to gain hands-on experience with the tools used to create software for a number of cutting-edge technologies.  These technologies include Android-based tablets, and Kinect motion sensors and Lego Mindstorms robots.  Undergraduate student Connor Bradley also demonstrated some of his award-winning driving simulation software, which was highly placed in the recent Imagine Cup.  Connor is a past-pupil of Loreto College and was able to inspire a number of students who are considering following in his footsteps.

Loreto College Head of ICT, Mr Clarke Rice thanked Dr Michaela Black, Dr Darryl Charles, Mr Nigel Creighton and Mrs Janet Allison for facilitating this trip and the Tutoring in Schools project.  He also extended thanks to the undergraduates who gave up their time to share their enthusiasm for a subject that has a wide range of diverse career options.

Dr Michaela Black thanked Mr Rice and the Loreto students, encouraging them to consider future study of Computer Science, which underpins all of the modern technology we now take for granted.

Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, commented that he was glad to continue and reinforce the link between Loreto and the University of Ulster in the promotion of STEM subject, including Computer Science, and was pleased that the students had benefited so much from the activity.
