Students who will represent N. Ireland in the UK Final of the Junior Mathematics Team Challenge with teacher Mrs G. Diamond
30/05/2012 LORETO COLLEGE IN FINAL OF NATIONAL MATHEMATICS COMPETITION
A team of 4 pupils from Loreto College will be competing against teams from across the United Kingdom for this year’s UK Team Maths Challenge trophy.
The team – Year 10 students Dylan Johnston and James Breslin along with Cormac McCarry and Cariosa O’Harte, both Year 9 - finished as runners up in the Regional Final held in Derry and won the opportunity to compete in the National Final at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London on Monday 18th June 2012. 1500 schools entered the competition and 80 have qualified to take part in the Final.
The National Final of the Team Maths Challenge, which is run by the UK Mathematics Trust, involves teams of four pupils from Years 8 and 9 (England), Years 9 and 10 (Northern Ireland) and Years S1 and S2 (Scotland), competing in:
• a group circus involving practical maths problems;
• a relay race combining physical and mental agility;
• a crossnumber (mathematical crossword);
• a series of head-to-head mini relay races; and
• a poster competition based on a mathematical subject.
The UK Mathematics Trust is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics. It organises national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for UK secondary school pupils. Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, paid tribute to the four students and to their teachers, Mrs Geraldine Diamond and Mrs Martina Mackle, for the work they had done in preparation for the competition, and on this tremendous success. On behalf of all the staff and students of the College, Mr James joined with Mrs Anne O’Kane, Head of Mathematics, in wishing the team every success in the National Final of the event.
