22/05/2012 OLYMPIC TORCH WALK FOR LORETO COLLEGE STUDENTS
Students from Loreto College Coleraine have been exploring the Olympic and Paralympic values this week as the count-down to the 2012 Olympics nears its end, and as the Coleraine and North Coast area get ready to welcome the Olympic Torch Relay.
During their Physical Education lessons, students have been learning about the Olympic Torch and its meaning, and discussing the Olympic Truce and its values. In preparation for the visit of the Olympic Torch to the Coleraine Borough Council area on 3rd and 4th June, students have watched a film and become familiar with the route the Torch will take. To highlight the upcoming visit of the Torch, students have then spent time, with their PE teachers, on an ‘Olympic Torch Walk’ down the Castlerock Road, around the Diamond and back to school. Along with a large Torch made by some Year 12 students and an impressive display of flags and other colourful displays of Olympic significance, some students have joined in the spirit of the activity by making and carrying their own Olympic Torches.
Mrs Maureen McCullough, Head of PE at Loreto College, commended the students on their interest in and enthusiasm for the 2012 Olympics, and thanked the passers-by who had offered the groups encouragement on their walks in the sunny springtime weather!
