14/05/2012 LORETO COLLEGE REPRESENTED AT COLERAINE HEART TOWN LAUNCH

Two students from Loreto College Coleraine recently attended a reception at the Coleraine Borough Council offices to mark the launch of the Coleraine: Heart Town initiative.

In conjunction with the British Heart Foundation Northern Ireland, Coleraine has been chosen as one of 50 Heart Towns in the UK and one of three in Northern Ireland.  Year 13 and Year 14 students from Loreto College had taken part in Heart Start training in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation, as well as gaining First Aid accreditation in conjunction with the St John’s Ambulance.  In total, 36 sixth formers from Loreto College received First Aid and Heartstart certificates in recent weeks.

Norene McBride and Ryan Reynolds, both Year 13 students, were selected to represent the College at this prestigious event, as both students had found themselves in situations in which their First Aid skills had been essential in recent months.  Both Ryan and Norene had encountered casualties in need of treatment for severe bleeding, and had each been praised by paramedics for their quick thinking, knowledge of what to do and calmness under pressure.

Norene and Ryan enjoyed the opportunity to be part of the Heart Town launch, and were praised for their initiative and quick thinking by Mrs Maureen McCullough, Head of Physical Education  at Loreto College, who had overseen their First Aid training.
