Staff and students of Loreto College Coleraine have raised a magnificent total of £5779.60 for Trócaire in the College’s annual Lenten fund-raising campaign.
Each form class in the College collected money each week, with some classes organising specific activities, such as raffles and cake sales, to add to their funds. In addition to this, all Year 10 students took part in a Sponsored Walk (organised by Head of Year 10 Mrs Jane Nugent), which raised a wonderful £1451.41. In the Physical Education department, a Netball event organised by Mrs Maureen McCullough and Ms Julie Wilson raised £60, while a Year 9-10 Soccer tournament organised by Mr Paul Byrne raised £96.60. An impressive number of students took part in the annual Trócaire Fast, raising £719. Top form classes in each year group were presented with certificates of achievement, while the top fund-raiser in the whole school was Maria Quinn, Year 8, who raised a magnificent £155.
Mrs Lorraine McCool, Social Justice Co-ordinator at Loreto College, paid tribute to all those who had got involved in the Trócaire campaign this year, contributing their initiative, ideas and generosity to such great effect. Mrs McCool commented that seeing such an impressive sum being raised for such a good cause during times of recession was evidence of the Loreto Ethos in action. Mr Michael James, College Principal, thanked Mrs McCool for leading the fund-raising and joined her in paying tribute to the generosity of everyone who had contributed their time, effort, ideas and financial support.
