Winners of an impressive number of major awards at the 2012 Coleraine Festival
Students who were among the top award-winners at the 2012 Coleraine Festival
27/03/2012 SUCCESS FOR LORETO DRAMA STUDENTS IN COLERAINE FESTIVAL
Six outstanding Drama students from Loreto College Coleraine have taken top awards at the annual Coleraine Festival.
Ben Levy, who is in Year 12 and currently studying Drama among his GCSE subjects, won an impressive array of awards. These included the Bernadette Higgins Speech Award for the best performance in the Drama classes; the Lynda Jane Memorial Cup for the most memorable performance in classes 213-234, the Owen Quigg Award of £100 awarded for the competitor over 14 showing the most promise (for the third consecutive year), and the Senior Festival Cup. Ben also won the Set Poem, Solo Drama and Shakespeare Solo classes in his age group and was named Senior Prize-winner of the year among all prize-winners in the senior age-groups.
Conal McGinley, a Year 11 student at Loreto College, also brought home an impressive array of trophies and medals from the Festival. Conal took first place in the Set Poem class, first place in the Favourite Poem class, first place in the Duologue class, first place in the Quick Study and Prose Unseen classes and, for the second consecutive year, won the much-coveted trophy for performance of a Shakespeare solo. Not content with all of these awards, Conal also won the prize for the Best Reading of Prose Unseen and the Junior Festival Cup.
Year 10 student Rhianna Gardiner, an extremely enthusiastic participant in Junior Drama at Loreto, won first place in the Set Poem class in the 14-15 girls’ age group. Showing tremendous promise for the future were three highly enthusiastic and talented Year 9 Loreto students: Aoife Carr, Emma Crossley and Alexandra McGinley. Aoife Carr took first place in the Junior Recital class in her age group, as well as first place in the Set Poem class. Aoife also took second place in the Age 12-13 Solo Drama class and the Favourite Poem class in the same age group. Finally, Aoife was the winner of the Junior Prize-winners’ award for all award-winners in the under 16 age group in the Festival. Emma Crossley took first place in her age group in the Quick Study class, first place in the Ballad Speaking class and first place in the Bible Reading class, as well as taking second place in the Duologue class, third place in the Solo Drama class, and third place in the Senior Prize-winners’ competition. Meanwhile, Alex McGinley took second place in the Set Poem class and third place in the Favourite Poem class.
All seven students were congratulated on these superb achievements, and for their tremendous enthusiasm for Drama, by Mrs Oonah McEwan, Head of Drama at Loreto College, and by Mr Michael James, College Principal, on behalf of all the staff and students of the school.
