Loreto College Coleraine, winners of the Ulster Colleges Casement Shield 2012
09/03/2012 LORETO CLAIM CASEMENT SHIELD
Loreto College Coleraine won their first BT Casement Shield when they came from behind at the break to defeat Edmund Rice College 2-11 to 3-5 on Wednesday 7th March 2012.
And they have the accuracy of Nicky McKeague to thank for their victory. The Dunloy forward fired home all but 2 points of their total and caused the Edmund Rice defence serious problems for the full hour.
Edmund Rice had the strong wind behind them and led by 2-3 to 0-4 at half-time thanks to goals from Eddie Begley and Ronan McCafferty and 3 frees from Micheal McGivern. Nicky McKeague had accounted for Loreto’s 4 points and during the third quarter he put his team into the lead with 2-3.
Edmund Rice hit back with a second goal from McCafferty and a McGivern point, but Kieran Kelly and Niall Kealey broke the McKeague monopoly on Loreto scores with points each, to which McGivern replied and, with 5 minutes to go, only a point separated the teams.
But Loreto twice broke quickly from defence and McKeague fired over 2 points to bring his personal tally to 2-9 and secure the title for his side.
Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, paid tribute to the Casement Shield winning team and the team coach, Mr Callum Boyle, for their determination and enthusiasm throughout the season and for a superb performance in challenging weather conditions on the day of the final.
