06/03/2012 LORETO VALIANT RUNNERS-UP IN ENNIS CUP DECIDER

The Year 9/10 Gaelic Football team from Loreto College Coleraine finished as runners-up in the Ulster Colleges BT Ennis Cup, following a tightly-contested final played on Friday 2nd March.

In a North Coast derby played in Dunloy, the Loreto side faced a strong team from Cross & Passion College, Ballycastle.  The Loreto team, coached by teachers Mr Kevin Conroy and Mr Peter Loughran, started well, with an 8 point lead going into the second half, following two goals scored by John Mullan and a point from Liam Tosh.  Shane McIntyre put Loreto ahead with a point early in the second half, but by this time the Coleraine side was coming under sustained pressure from Ballycastle.  The game went into extra time, during which a further Loreto point was scored by Stiofan Tracey.  However unluckily for the courageous, spirited and determined Loreto side, Cross & Passion’s Diarmaid McShane scored once again in the dying moments of the second period of extra time, giving the Ballycastle side a two-point victory and its first football title.

Team coaches Mr Peter Loughran and Mr Kevin Conroy paid tribute to their team-members, who had worked hard through a busy season of training and fixtures to reach the final, and had acquitted themselves so impressively on the day.  Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, commented that, though it had been heart-breaking for the team to lose by so narrow a margin in the very final minutes before the end of the game, they had nonetheless completed a wonderful campaign in the competition, making their entire school community and families extremely proud.

The team-members for Loreto College were: Loreto : Daniel Walton, Shea McLaughlin, Conor Boyle, Connor Rafferty, Shea Doherty, James Gillen, Stiofan Treacy 0-1, Shea Eastwood, John Mullan 2-0, Liam Tosh 0-1, Gareth Doherty, Conor Gillen, Jack O’Doherty, Thomas Magee, Shane McIntyre 0-2.
