A team of sixth form Economics students from Loreto College Coleraine has scored a success in the annual Belfast Telegraph Shares competition, sponsored by Investec.

The eight Year 13 students took part in the province-wide competition along with students from 35 other schools.  The Loreto College team had a notional sum of £100,000 to invest in stocks registered on the Stock Market (FTSE 350).  Every month the team members made decisions based on which stocks to buy or sell.  Some stocks rose in value whilst others fell.  The aim of the competition was for the students to manage their portfolio of stocks to maximise the initial investment and increase its value above that of other schools.  By the end of the competition on 10th February 2012, the Loreto students had soared up the table, finishing in second place in the province.  An impressive 24% return on the initial investment had even managed to outperform the 4.63% rise in the value of the FTSE 350 index since the competition got underway in October.   The team members were awarded £250 worth of HMV vouchers and were delighted with their performance!

Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, paid tribute to the Economics team on its sustained success and excellent finishing position, and to their Economics teacher, Miss Stacey O’Neill.  The team-members were: Aidan Carlin, Adam Cummings, Niamh Meehan, Caoimhe McCullagh, Kirsty McCormick, Liam McVeigh, Ruairi Mooney and Ryan Reynolds, all of whom are AS Level Economics students.
