07/02/2012 SUCCESS FOR LORETO COLLEGE YOUNG CHEF IN ROTARY COMPETITION
A talented young chef from Loreto College Coleraine has taken top honours in the local and Northern Ireland heats of the Rotary Young Chef competition this year.
Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland believes it is highly important to encourage and develop creativity in young people, and this includes creativity in the kitchen. Cooking is a growing interest amongst young people and a valuable life skill. Schools seem to agree and hence the RIBI Young Chef competition, in association with Filippo Berio, moves forward from strength to strength each year, producing some superb quality cooking from our young people aged from 11 to 17.
Therefore on Monday 16th January the Coleraine heats of the RIBI Young Chef competition took place in Loreto, with 5 of the 6 finalists coming from the College and the final student from North Coast Integrated College. The students had to produce a 3 course healthy meal for £15 within two hours.
The judging panel consisted of a member of the Local RIBI, a catering specialist, a nutrition expert and a chef from the Ramore Wine Bar, Portrush. An extremely enjoyable morning ensued, with the students showing off their excellent culinary skills and creativity. The judging panel commented on the exceptionally high standard from all the students involved and we in Loreto College were delighted that Payton Mullan Y11 won on the day. Her menu was a clear winner with all the judges and all agreed she thoroughly deserved her prize of a pastry and dessert making session, courtesy of the Wine Bar. Saachi Khullar Y10 was highly commended for her Indian themed menu. Payton went on the represent Coleraine in the Northern Ireland final in Belfast on 28th January and once again was successful.
Mrs Mabel McAleese, Head of Home Economics at Loreto College Coleraine, commented: ‘We are very proud of what Payton has achieved, and delighted that she now goes on to the All Ireland finals in Dublin on the 25th February.’
Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, paid tribute to all those who took part in the competition – whether organising, competing or adjudicating – and wished Payton every success in the All Ireland finals on behalf of all the staff and students of the College.
