11/01/2012 LORETO COLLEGE STUDENTS ENJOY QUB SCIENCE TRIP
A group of twenty-four Year 10 students from Loreto College Coleraine spent a day in Belfast just before Christmas, spending time at Queen’s University and the Ulster Museum.
The students had won the trip as their prize for taking first place in the inter-class Display Board competition on the theme of Environmental Science, during the Loreto College Science Week in early November.
During their visit to Queen’s University, the students attended a talk on Communicating with Light, which was given by Professor Marco Borghesi, Physics Lecturer. The talk gave an interesting insight into the evolution of long distance communication from the days of smoke signals, through telegrams, right up to the modern day transmission of data using fibre optic cables.
This was followed by a visit to the Ulster Museum, where the students followed a self guided tour focusing on the scientific discoveries and inventions.
Mrs Katrina Brolly and Mrs Jane Nugent, who co-ordinated the event and accompanied the students on the trip, commented that the day had been both educational and enjoyable and that it had been of great benefit to the students who took part.
